Kleanthis Kyriakou

Åpent foredrag
Fredag 17. mars
18.00 - 20.00

A talk about how 'Queering' liberated his architectural practice and forged new ways of thinking and doing. Kyriakou will be reflecting on the above from four different standpoints: Practice, Research, Academia and Teaching, through presenting the exhibition he designed and curated about London's lost LGBTQ+ spaces. (including the various artworks produced); Wet-Hard Agency at the Venice Biennale; the course he ran at Central Saint Martins last fall titled: 'Queering the Classroom'.

Kleanthis Kyriakou is a multidisciplinary artist, architectural designer and academic. He cur- rently teaches architecture at Central Saint Martins, on BA and MA level, where he inserts performance and radical making into spatial practice. His own artistic work revolves around memorializing and celebrating LGBTQ+ spaces that have disappeared from the built environ- ment due to gentrification and the rise of online dating apps. Kleanthis worked on this subject in contrasting contexts, both in London and the Caribbean. His award-winning thesis “House of Extravaganza” presented a speculative proposition for a new queer utopia in London, based on obliterated LGBTQ+ histories. The project has been nominated for the RIBA Silver Medal Award, won the Deans Collection Award, as well as the Spatial Practices Award for Cultural Equity.
He collaborates with Dr Regner Ramos through their research & design practice, Wet-Hard Agency. His work has been exhibited in Roca London gallery, Grade I listed Strawberry Hill House, the Venice Biennale and Feldfünf gallery in Berlin. Kleanthis is a Graham foundation ‘New Media’ grantee (2021-2023) alongside Regner, for their project: “Coloso: A factory of queer, digital monuments for Puerto Rico”.
Most recently Kleanthis has co-curated and produced artworks for a new exhibition that documents the histories of the lost queer pubs of Lewisham. The exhibition has been funded by Lewisham Borough of Culture, Mayor of London, Goldsmiths and Lottery fund.
Kleanthis often performs as his drag alter ego, Divine the III.
