This year’s curator, Paul Tunge, takes his starting point in his own frustration at how modernism is so often made the scapegoat in today’s architectural debates—particularly when high-rises at Løren and similar projects are mistakenly referred to as modernist. Such buildings stand in sharp contrast to modernism’s core principles: an understanding of materials, harmony with nature, and a strong sense of space. Perhaps it is time to reassess and clarify our terminology, so that we can better distinguish between modernism’s visionary roots and the commercial dilution of its ideals today.

The architecture of the 20th century, especially after the 1920s, is often grouped under the term modernism. This year’s films offer different perspectives on postwar modernism and its influence.
The modernists sought to break with tradition and create new expressions. As a style and epoch, modernist architecture emphasised material awareness, integration with nature, spatial experience, natural light, engineering, innovation, and a joy of creation. The films in the program explore architects’ careers, how architecture shapes us as people, the photographer’s gaze on buildings, the often-hidden role of the engineer, questions of preservation, and how architecture can contribute to gathering and shaping us as a society.
