The space will be a tactile place for exploration. Visitors can experience and actively participate in AUG’s collaborative approach, which emerges from the intersection of volunteerism, professional expertise, and limited available resources.
Through models, photographs, film, and interviews, specific projects from AUG’s work are presented. A dedicated “laboratory” within the exhibition allows you to explore the working methods yourself. Here you can try out the tools and participate in small workshops throughout the exhibition period.
AUG’s work is grounded in sustainability; social, economic, and environmental. The reuse of materials, local roots, and climate friendly solutions are a natural part of the projects on display.
The space will convey these stories through materials, methods, local knowledge, contributions, reuse, and impact. A tapestry of what happens when people meet on equal terms, with different perspectives, from different cultures. What emerges from these encounters? When we build with what is available, and imagine what it could become?
This exhibition is not just about what architecture is, but about what it can become. It showcases a practice where architecture helps create safe, inclusive, and functional environments - in close collaboration with the people it serves.
10 years, 100 volunteers
May 28 – June 14
2026
In 2026, we will celebrate the founding of Architects Without Borders in Norway (AUG) - a humanitarian architecture organization, with an anniversary exhibition. The exhibition on AUG will be open during this period: 10 years of work, 50 architectural projects involving over 100 people.
The exhibition is also a meeting place. A varied program of lectures, discussions, and events brings together professionals, students, and curious visitors. At the same time, we aim to ensure that you, as a visitor, not only learn but also have the opportunity to get further involved - whether as a volunteer, a partner, or through your own initiatives. For school children and young students, the exhibition offers an opportunity to experience how architecture can be relevant in addressing real world societal challenges. We’re hosting several events, so stay tuned for updates!
AUGs prosjektoversikt
"It's about creating spaces that support our health and happiness."
ROM is proud to serve as venue for the anniversary exhibition. AUG is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers, with projects in over 20 countries. from Romania and Ukraine to Zambia and Argentina, AUG’s approach stands out distinctly in the Norwegian context. Through a consistent and participatory approach, they actively work on integration and inclusion, not as abstract goals, but as concrete actions in practice. Communicating this values-based way of working through an exhibition opens up a necessary discussion about architecture’s role in society, and about the architect’s responsibility and methodology. In doing so, we build networks and a sense of community around how architectural practice can be developed to create real social value.
Since 2025, AUG and ROM have collaborated on a pilot project in which AUG occupies the second floor of ROM’s premises at Maridalsveien 3. The project is based on a shared set of values regarding architecture’s social responsibility and explores how physical and organizational spaces can be shared in new ways. The anniversary exhibition is a natural part of this collaboration.
