Eknæs explores the question of how to create an exhibition. She has invited artists Michael Amstad, Nicolau Vergueiro, and Ciara Philips, as well as the ROM team, to contribute various interventions in the process. This approach allows for experimentation and blurring the boundaries between operations, administration, and exhibition production. Together, we build upon the understanding that the art space cannot be seen in isolation from the society it exists within.
Circulation Realm
Marte Eknæs with Michael Amstad and Nicolau Vergueiro
25 January – 26. February 2023
ROM is excited to present a brand-new exhibition by Marte Eknæs! Eknæs explores the question of how to create an exhibition.
The project's economy, resource utilization, social conditions, politics, and the climate crisis are directly influenced by the same mechanisms that govern society as a whole. The exhibition's artworks reveal and make visible how technical, material, and social conditions have shaped each individual form. Used street brooms, a sign, thermal imaging cameras, Norwegian satellites, exhibition contracts, an inflatable fender, and trash bins are all elements within the exhibition that circulate in a world of information, helping us to understand it.
During the final weekend of the exhibition, we warmly welcome you to an informal meeting with Marte Eknæs and Ciara Phillips. You are invited to explore the exhibition and engage in conversations with the artists about their works, creative process, and collaboration.
As part of ROM studio in April 2021, Eknæs had the opportunity to choose an "academic conversation partner." Phillips is Eknæs' conversation partner, who, in one way or another, contributes to the project in the short or long term. During the period of April 12-23, 2021, Phillips and Eknæs continued their ongoing dialogue about the relationship between the artist and the institution, drawing from their own experiences with challenging institutional collaborations.
In the final days of the exhibition Circulation Realm, ROM once again transforms into a studio, providing a framework for Eknæs and Phillips to further reflect by working on a woodcut print based on their collaboration from ROM Studio 2021. This way, the last weekend of the exhibition marks the continuation of Circulation Realm as a project.
