One year ago, the debut book of social geographer Alf Jørgen Schnell, 'On the Trail of the Lost Future,' was published by ROM Publishing. Schnell's critical stance on power sparked public debate about urban development, not least by historicizing our era's dominant urbanism, but also by launching a frontal attack on some of today's foremost urbanists.

In the book, Schnell traces post-war modernism criticism to our time, demonstrating how modernism's social ambitions were gradually abandoned in favor of a market orientation in urban development.

Alf Jørgen Schnell is a writer and research fellow in social geography at the University of Oslo, where he is working on a project about the future in fact and fiction.
