Becoming with Architecture (2021), Lisbeth Funck

Becoming with Architecture:
An artistic study of the abstracted space in Neue Nationalgalerie, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and Casa del Fascio

The project is an exploration of three buildings: Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, and Casa del Fascio in Como. The project consists of two parts: a textual reflection that discusses the intersection of architecture, art, and philosophy, and a visual component where Funck illuminates the buildings through her own photographs, paintings, drawings, physical models, and more.

Funck's research project seeks to include a sensual experience of the physical world of architectural space. Can structure and material properties have the capacity to radiate and interweave in an architectural space? How can this radiating spatial unity be perceived and described? Can this space be understood as a material, an additional spatial layer to the built structure?

Rather than proposing concrete answers, Funck highlights the processual aspects of architecture (and the architect). The theories Funck discusses represent different positions related to sensual experiences based on human perception and essentialism. The project is based on a process-oriented understanding of the world that challenges human beings' sovereign position in relation to other living and non-living beings.
