About Urbane økologier

"Urban Ecologies: Sensing Beyond the Human" is an ambitious and innovative artistic research project consisting of an exhibition, outreach program, and publication spanning the period from 2020 to 2022. Through a dynamic collaborative process, the project participants have created new works that explore the relationship between urban development, technology, and various forms of perception. What types of urban knowledge are excluded when the city and urban development are governed by data and algorithms from the increasingly extensive network of distributed sensor technologies?

Urbane økologier critically examines the fast-paced data-driven urban development. Through a wide range of research methods, the research group aims to recognize, study, and discuss alternative forms of urban knowledge, whether human or non-human, that collectively shape Oslo's diverse urban ecologies. The exhibition explores how artistic research can offer new perspectives on challenging and important issues, while also making them accessible to the public and the general citizenry. Therefore, in the research project Urbane økologier, artistic research is developed in collaboration with the knowledge and understanding of the dissemination institution.

The project Urbane økologier is based on Bull.Miletic's longstanding investigative artistic practice. In October 2019, ROM invited them to create a new exhibition in our gallery. What started as concrete ideas for new artworks evolved from the very beginning into an interest in how we could develop new forms of collaboration for artistic research outside educational institutions, akin to a postdoctoral model.

At ROM for kunst og arkitektur, we are excited to be a collaborative platform when the exhibition opens. Bull.Miletic's knowledge and commitment have provided a unique opportunity for ROM to further develop the ambition of incorporating in-depth research within art, architecture, and place-making, following the increased international focus on artistic research beyond educational institutions. You are now invited into an innovative and enlightening project while we are still in the midst of the process. Urbane økologier has its own website where you can learn more about the project, the participants involved, and the planned public activities.
